GUTVOID – Breathing Obelisk CASSETTE

GUTVOID - Breathing Obelisk CASSETTE (BUNDLE)

BLOOD HARVEST RECORDS is proud to present GUTVOID’s highly anticipated new mini-album, Breathing Obelisk, on CD, 12″ vinyl, and cassette tape formats.

Since their formation in 2019, the ascent of Canada’s GUTVOID has been nothing if not meteoric. From their initially digital-only debut EP, Astral Bestiary, receiving a physical release courtesy of BLOOD HARVEST to the Four Dimensions of Auditory Terror four-way split shared with BLOOD SPORE, COAGULATE, and SOUL DEVOURMENT the following year – again, via BLOOD HARVEST – GUTVOID churned forth a world-eating Metal of Death that duly devoured the listener whole. Still, massive potential lurked, and it arrived with one of the most fully-formed death metal debut albums in 2022’s Durance of Lightless Horizons. Hailed far and wide upon its release and thereafter, Durance of Lightless Horizons simply intensified all the hallmarks of their sound – heaving, vertigo-inducing, spiraling like tar-thick smoke – and then sharpened them with a sterling sense of clarity, allowing their yearning, come-hither melodicism to evoke both melancholy and malice.

Taken individually, each of GUTVOID’s recordings builds upon the last but offers surprising twists of the knife. And so it goes with the band’s brand-new mini-album Breathing Obelisk. Totaling 31 minutes across four tracks, one can easily do the math and surmise that GUTVOID here are stretching out into epic territory. Fittingly, they open up their world-eating sound to include looser execution, more fist-pumping mid-tempos, hypnotic repetition of melody, linear-but-not-really songwriting, and a strange style of grooviness…or “grooviness” in that it’s akimbo and angular and yet still supremely rhythmic in a manner most surprising for tried-and-true death metal. Here, the band eschew much of the doominess of their preceding work and instead allow those vast vistas of space pregnant with tension & terror to be built back up with rolling tank-treads of mountainous might. The cover art to Breathing Obelisk, then, begins to make more sense in the context of this textural shift; it’s GUTVOID at their most approachable and most alien – clearly recognizable, fully in focus, and yet somehow incomprehensible for the strange transmissions they’re emitting from some unknown outpost. That these four songs run anywhere from six minutes to nearly ten bespeaks not bloat, but rather a desire to patiently unfold their dread landscapes – and then do so with a remarkable memorability that’s not predictable verse/chorus formulae. And the rougher, dirtier production heightens this unfussy uniqueness that much more.

Cementing their status as one of the best still-young death metal entities around, GUTVOID challenge you to stand before their Breathing Obelisk.

GUTVOID – Astral Bestiary CASSETTE (Silver Shell)

GUTVOID - Astral Bestiary CASSETTE (2nd edition)

GUTVOID hail from Toronto, Ontario and quickly set to work on their first public recording. While Astral Bestiary is indeed the quartet's first recording, the members of GUTVOID collectively contain a wealth of experience within Canada's extreme metal scene, and it duly shows in the EP's eldritch-yet-fresh attack. Ominously swarming, churning forth with world-eating Metal of Death that devours the listener whole, GUTVOID traverse a wealth of compositional territory within the record's three-song/24-minute runtime, dragging that listener across fetid slime and bestial grind, funereal doom and industrial-sized stomp, and even catchy headbanging parts…before the sinister slipstream takes that listener under, with all finality. To their credit, the quartet evade so much of the riff-less murk characterizing nowadays “sepulchral” death metal; if anything, Astral Bestiary maintains a refreshingly clear aspect, allowing every note to ring true and terrorizing. But make no mistake: this onslaught is literally MASSIVE, in every sense of the word.

GUTVOID – Durance Of Lightless Horizons CASSETTE (2nd Edition)

GUTVOID - Durance of Lightless Horizons CASSETTE (Jcard)

BLOOD HARVEST RECORDS is proud to present GUTVOID’s highly anticipated debut album, Durance of Lightless Horizons, on CD, vinyl LP, and cassette formats.
The CD and tape versions will be released on September 23rd, 2022.
The double-vinyl version will follow in January, 2023.

Formed in 2019, the ascent of Canada’s GUTVOID has been nothing if not meteoric. The Toronto natives digitally released their debut EP, Astral Bestiary, later that autumn and came to the attention of BLOOD HARVEST, who then released it physically in 2020. And for good reason: ominously swarming, GUTVOID churned forth a world-eating Metal of Death that duly devoured the listener whole. More than being a three-song/24-minute soundworld unto itself, Astral Bestiary was a statement of intent from a bold-yet-pure DEATH METAL band.

Continuing that momentum was the even-bolder “Forbidden City Beneath the Crypt” digital single later in 2020, and the absolutely gelatinous Four Dimensions of Auditory Terror four-way split shared with BLOOD SPORE, COAGULATE, and SOUL DEVOURMENT, underlining GUTVOID’s slimy, mind-mangling roots. The stage was thus set for the inevitable full-length debut…

And now it arrives bearing the ominous title Durance of Lightless Horizons. Immediately, this titanic recording bears the hallmarks of the still-fresh GUTVOID sound: heaving, vertigo-inducing, spiraling like tar-thick smoke. And yet, the sterling sense of clarity the quartet only hinted at before takes full flight here; Durance of Lightless Horizons entices and then entrances the listener with a yearning, come-hither sort of melodicism underpinned by both melancholy and malice. That the execution has somehow tightened up even more – truly, GUTVOID’s chops were exemplary before – allows these doom-drenched ruminations to cut sharper than ever, giving even the most stuck-in-quicksand passages to impart palpitating movement. But, rest assured that the songwriting across Durance of Lightless Horizons is an ever-so-patient one; linear to the very end, each passage conveys its sensation and then slithers into the next with a grace quite at odds with such a gutted sound.

It is not hyperbole to suggest that Durance of Lightless Horizons is one of the most fully-formed death metal debuts in recent memory. To celebrate its grand arrival, BLOOD HARVEST will also be doing a limited run of Ancient Bestiary on vinyl with the previously digital-only “Forbidden City Beneath the Crypt” included as bonus. This is indeed the year of GUTVOID.
