Originally released digitally in October 2024, Sidereal Malignancy announced the rebirth of COSMOPHAGE. Previously, under the moniker Utterance, the Brazilian band had released the two-song Conflagration EP in 2019 – a tantalizingly short teaser of the band’s potential. That potential has now blossomed on Sidereal Malignancy. Honoring that ever-apt title, here do COSMOPHAGE mangle mind and body with gutted ‘n’ angular DEATH METAL of a most mid-’90s vintage. The spectre of Sinister looms large here, but the Dutch legends’ classic works more so form a foundation for COSMOPHAGE ​to find their own voice. And indeed they do across these six songs – slashing one minute, stomping the next, working in walking-backwards riffing as well as copious displays of brute strength, but always with a view ​to violate expectations of where a song could go next. Not so much “tech” as just “fully fried,” Sidereal Malignancy is a bountiful feast for death metal diehards who prize brainy brutality and suitably crushing production.
